Leaves scattered across the frozen ground

Your breath hangs like a ghost in the air

The sun holding on

Just beyond

The tree line

Darkness creeping

A winter so cold

Colder than I’ve ever known

Freezing the marrow

Inside of tired bones

Blood spilled

Upon virgin snow

A lovely spatter

Beneath the evening glow

When a bird struggles

In the street

It’s wing shattered

Unsteady on its feet

I feel its fear subside

While I cradle it against me

It’s broken body
